Soil - Brand Story -

soil = earth

Nature Breath Circulation

‘soil’ is a range of products made from diatomaceous earth using plastering techniques which allow maximum benefit from the natural properties of the material - its breathability, moisture retention and absorption. We have managed to condens these natural blessings in our roster of design led products, all of which are gentle enough for sensitive skin and recyclable. ‘soil’ will help to shape a better future in eco-friendly and people-friendly ways.

History
Toyama prefecture has long been a Centre for traditional plasterwork and has its roots in the Edo period. In 1917, drawing on the expertise of four generations of plasterers, the company Isurigi was founded in Kanazawa. Over the years Isurigi has been involved in the restoration of several historic buildings including Zuiruiji Temple in Takaoka and Osaka’s landmark castle. The company has since lent its technical expertise to numerous prestigious architectural projects including Universal Studios Japan, Osaka Dome and the iconic rail station building in Kyoto.
More recently, in 2004, Isurigi teamed up with contemporary design consultancy soil, utilizing its artisanal plastering expertise to co-create a collection of homewares. Key to the appeal of soil’s products is the use of diatomaceous earth. Made up of vegetable plankton, the material has a highly porous structure making for excellent water absorption and moisture retention. Isurigi’s plastering techniques sculpt pieces that preserve these sedimentary qualities as well as the natural colors of the earth. The series celebrates five gentle colors (white, black, pink, blue and green) each of which represent the natural hues of Akita and Ishikawa prefectures, from where the diatomaceous soil is sourced.
